In order for Access Update to create a time and cost estimate for your database project, you will need to prepare a list of requirements. This is a formal breakdown of all of the features and functions that will be included in the database. If you don't have a Requirements List, and most clients don't, Denise will be glad to work with you to create one. This process gives you the chance to define the scope of the project, have the budget approved, and ensure that we both agree on what needs to be done.
Creating the Time Estimate

Once your Requirements List has been created, Denise can give you a "best estimate" of the time needed to complete the project. If you have specific time or financial constraints, Denise will work with you to develop a Requirements List that can fit within your schedule and budget.

Since all database development projects differ in complexity, function, and size, the development time can vary enormously. The total hours needed to complete your project will be determined by several factors:

  • the complexity of the database - type of data being stored, number of data entry forms, queries, and reports, etc.
  • whether the database will be on one computer or shared over a network
  • the completeness and accuracy of the Requirements List
  • the amount of changes you make to the original Requirements List once development begins
  • the promptness of your response to any requests for materials, information, or decisions
  • the scope of your documentation and training needs
  • the state of the data that will be transferred into the new database and how closely it matches the new requirements
  • the quality of your hardware, operating system, network, and technical support staff
  • the import, export, and connection capabilities of any software applications with which the database must communicate
  • any unforeseen complications or delays
Rates for Hourly Contract Work

Access Update makes things easy with one standard hourly rate for all services including custom database development, technical support, documentation, and training. Once the project requirements are defined, most work can be performed off-site at Access Update. When on-site visits are required, an additional trip charge is added. There is a four hour minimum per project. All services from Access Update are offered on an independent contractor basis.

What if it Takes Longer?

Custom database development for large projects can be very unpredictable. If it should ever appear that the original time estimate will be exceeded, Denise will notify you immediately. She will then work with you to assess the situation, prioritize your requirements, and make recommendations as to whether the project should be modified accordingly or continued as planned.

New Ideas for New Versions
After you've used your custom designed database for a while, you may have new ideas for additional features that weren't included in the first version. Access Update can work with you to define the new requirements and develop the upgrades. Enhancements and modifications made after you've had a chance to work with a new database can give you an even greater return on your initial investment.
